Car rental in Cyprus has a credit card problem that catches many newcomers off guard. You arrive at the rental desk with your Revolut card — which works perfectly in shops and restaurants — and it gets declined for the deposit hold. Here’s why, and what to do about it.

Why Revolut Gets Declined at Car Rental Desks

Car rental companies require a credit card for the deposit hold — specifically because they need the ability to charge against a credit line if the car is damaged. Revolut is a prepaid card, not a credit card. When the rental system runs a check, it identifies Revolut as prepaid and declines it for the deposit.

This isn’t a Revolut problem per se — it’s the same for all prepaid cards. The rental company isn’t rejecting you; their system is identifying the card type as incompatible with their deposit requirements.

Which Cards Work for Car Rental in Cyprus?

Bunq (recommended) — The best solution. Bunq is a genuine Mastercard credit card, accepted at all car rental desks in Cyprus. Opens online in minutes, no Cyprus address required. €4.99/month. This is the card to have specifically for car rental and hotel deposits.

Local bank credit cards — Bank of Cyprus, Alpha Bank, Eurobank Cyprus credit cards all work perfectly. The problem is eligibility — you need local income and an existing account. Not available to most newcomers.

Traditional UK/EU credit cards — Your Barclays, HSBC, or Revolut credit card (the actual credit product, not the prepaid card) all work fine. If you have a credit card from your home country, bring it.

The Revolut Credit Card (UK only)

Revolut does offer an actual credit card in the UK — this is different from the standard Revolut card. The UK Revolut credit card works at car rentals. If you have it, use it. It is not available in Cyprus yet.

Practical Advice

  1. Get Bunq before you arrive — open it online from your home country. When you land and go to pick up your rental car, Bunq works.
  2. If you already have a credit card from home — bring it. Even if it has FX fees, use it for the deposit hold and pay with Revolut/Wise for the actual rental cost.
  3. Check the rental company’s policy — some local Cyprus operators (Leo Opsimos, Camel Car Hire) are more flexible and may accept debit cards. International chains (Hertz, Avis, Budget) almost universally require a credit card.

The Cost of Being Unprepared

Arriving at a rental desk in Cyprus without a credit card means either paying expensive daily insurance add-ons (€15–€25/day) that the chains sell as an alternative, or not being able to rent at all. Bunq at €4.99/month costs less than one day of unnecessary insurance.
