How to Get Proof of Address in Cyprus (For Bank Account Opening)

Proof of address is the document that trips up most people trying to open a bank account in Cyprus. If you’ve just arrived, you may not have a Cyprus utility bill. If you’re renting, you may not have set up utilities in your name yet. Here’s how to navigate this.
The Good News: You Don’t Always Need a Cyprus Address
Revolut and Wise require no proof of address at all. Open them now, from anywhere.
For local Cypriot banks, most will accept a foreign proof of address — a utility bill or bank statement from your home country. You don’t need a Cyprus address to open an account.
What Counts as Proof of Address?
Accepted by most banks:
Cyprus addresses:
- EAC (electricity) bill in your name
- Water board bill in your name
- Internet/landline bill in your name (mobile phone bills are usually not accepted)
- Official government letter to your Cyprus address
- Rental agreement (in your name)
- Cyprus council tax / municipality notice
- MEU1 registration card (for EU citizens who have registered at Civil Registry)
- ARC / Yellow Slip (Alien Registration Certificate for non-EU)
Foreign addresses (usually accepted):
- Utility bill from your home country (electricity, gas, water)
- Bank statement from your home country bank
- Government letter (tax assessment, HMRC correspondence, etc.)
- Must be dated within the last 3 months
- Must show your full name and full address
Usually NOT accepted:
- Mobile phone bills
- Supermarket loyalty statements
- Insurance documents (at most banks)
- Hotel confirmations
What to Do If You’ve Just Arrived and Have No Address
Immediate solution: Open Revolut or Wise. No address needed. You have a working account within 15 minutes.
Short-term for a Cyprus address:
-
Rental agreement — even a 1-month rental gives you an address. The rental agreement itself is often accepted as proof of address even before utilities are set up.
-
Ask your landlord to provide a letter — a signed letter from your landlord confirming you live at the property, notarised if possible. Some banks accept this.
-
Set up EAC electricity — you can register an EAC account in your name relatively quickly (EAC has a website and English service). An EAC bill in your name is the gold standard proof of address.
-
MEU1 / Yellow Slip — if you are registering your residency in Cyprus, the MEU1 card (EU citizens) or Yellow Slip/ARC (non-EU) confirms your Cyprus address and is widely accepted.
-
Employer letter — some banks (particularly AstroBank and Ancoria) accept a signed letter from a Cyprus employer confirming your employment and work address.

How to Set Up EAC Electricity Quickly
If your rental doesn’t include electricity in the rent:
- Visit eac.com.cy or call EAC on 77778000
- Provide your rental agreement and passport
- Pay a connection deposit (typically €150–€200, refunded when you leave)
- Account is usually active within 1–3 days
Your first EAC bill arrives after a month. If you need proof of address urgently, ask EAC for a confirmation letter when setting up the account — some branches provide this.
The Practical Path
- Now: Open Revolut (no address needed)
- On arrival: Sign a rental agreement → this is your first Cyprus address document
- Week 1: Set up EAC electricity in your name
- Week 4: You have an EAC bill — visit your chosen bank with all documents
