Banking in Cyprus for Retirees — The Complete Guide

Retiring to Cyprus is one of the most popular moves for British and Northern European retirees. Here's everything you need to know about banking.

What Retirees Actually Need from a Cyprus Bank

Retirees moving to Cyprus typically have three core banking needs: somewhere to receive their pension, somewhere to pay bills and local expenses, and a way to transfer money from their home country at reasonable exchange rates. Each of these is best served by a different solution — and the good news is all of it is manageable.

The Best Banking Setup for Retirees in Cyprus

Our recommended setup for British (or other) retirees in Cyprus:

  1. Wise — for receiving and converting your UK pension. Use Wise to convert GBP to EUR at the mid-market rate. On a monthly pension of £2,000, Wise saves you roughly €20–€40 per month versus a traditional bank transfer — around €400 per year.
  2. Revolut — for daily spending, card payments, and ATM withdrawals. The free plan is sufficient for most retirees.
  3. Eurobank Cyprus or Bank of Cyprus — for in-person banking, local bill payments, and anything that requires a traditional Cypriot bank account. Eurobank Cyprus has a better expat reputation; Bank of Cyprus has more branches.

Branch Access — Why It Matters for Retirees

Unlike digital nomads or tech workers who are comfortable with app-only banking, many retirees prefer — and occasionally need — in-person branch service. For this reason, a local Cypriot bank account is more important for retirees than for younger newcomers.

Bank of Cyprus has the largest network — approximately 70 branches across the island — with strong presence in Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, and Nicosia. English-speaking staff are available at most branches. Eurobank Cyprus has around 45 branches and a notably better reputation among British expats for helpfulness and patience.

Transferring Your UK Pension to Cyprus

This is where many retirees lose money unnecessarily. Never transfer your pension or savings using your UK high street bank's international transfer service — the exchange rate markup is typically 2–4%, meaning you lose €80–€160 on every £2,000 transferred.

Use Wise instead. Wise uses the real mid-market exchange rate with a transparent fee of 0.3–0.6%. On a £2,000 monthly pension transfer, this costs approximately £8–£12 rather than the £40–£80 a traditional bank charges.

Is Your Money Safe in a Cyprus Bank?

The 2013 banking crisis is a legitimate concern, and it's right to ask this question. Here is the honest answer:

Do You Need a Cyprus Bank Account for Your Residency Application?

Cyprus Category F residency (the retiree visa) requires demonstrating sufficient funds — typically proof of pension income or savings. This can usually be shown with your UK bank statements. However, once you are resident, having a local Cypriot bank account makes it significantly easier to pay local bills, taxes (council tax, property tax), and handle administrative matters.

English-Language Banking in Cyprus

English is widely spoken at Cypriot banks, particularly in areas with large British expat populations: Paphos, Limassol Marina, Larnaca, and the Famagusta district. You will rarely encounter a situation where you cannot conduct your banking in English. Revolut's app is also fully in English, of course.
